Saalumarada Venkatesh (C. M. Venkatesh) is an environmentalist whose life mission has transformed the landscape of Chamarajanagar Dist, Santhemarahalli, Yelandur, Kollegal, Hanuru, Male Mahadeshwara Hills, Gundlupet and surrounding places. Born on 5 June 1972 — World Environment Day, his life’s path naturally aligned with the cause of protecting nature. Today, he stands as a symbol of dedication, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to a greener tomorrow.
For over a decade, Venkatesh has planted and nurtured more than 16,000 trees, turning barren and sun-baked streets into cool, green avenues. His work has reshaped the city’s environment and inspired thousands to take responsibility for the planet.
What began as a simple act of planting saplings gradually turned into a lifelong mission. Inspired by playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Venkatesh began planting saplings every year on the singer’s birthday in 2017 April 24th. Also its a day of Dr. Rajkumar Birthday too.
Despite working as an accountant, he invested a major portion of his income in greenery. When finances became difficult, he borrowed money — and eventually sold his own house to repay the loans, choosing his environmental mission over personal comfort.
He often says:
“Trees are my family too. They give life, shade, happiness — and I am blessed to serve them.”
Venkatesh dreams of a future where:
Every city road of Chamrajanagar District becomes a green corridor
Citizens take ownership of trees in their neighbourhood
Young people actively participate in environmental protection
Urban spaces transform into cooler, healthier, sustainable environments
With each sapling he plants, Venkatesh continues to inspire hope, responsibility and ecological harmony.
He has been honoured by government bodies, district officers, and environmental organisations for his extraordinary, selfless contribution.
Numerous media houses such as Prajavani, Deccan Herald, and Udayavani have featured his inspiring story.
Venkatesh’s tree-planting mission has turned previously dry and dusty city roads into lush, shaded avenues.
His dedication has encouraged schools, youth groups, local organisations and citizens to participate in tree planting and maintenance drives.
The thousands of trees he has nurtured now provide natural cooling, reduce pollution, support bird life and contribute to a calmer, cleaner environment.
